Creating Affirmations that Heal

Did you know that one of the most powerful MindBody tools that you can use – that most of you are already using – is your Inner Communication?

By simply speaking to yourself and doing daily affirmations you have the remarkable ability to heal your own life.

While we all do some form of self-talk, the ability to do it correctly may not come naturally. Often people speak in the negative by using affirmations like, “I’m not tired,” or “I’m not in pain.” When you try to use affirmative statements (“I feel amazing!”), you will find that your inner voice quickly replaces those thoughts with “but this is so not true!”

Your body is always listening to whatever thoughts you’re having about it, so you really want to focus on what outcome or experience that you do want.

So how can you win over the subconscious negative thoughts that you’ve already bought into? (They are after all, below your conscious awareness!)

First of all, you need to find an affirmation that will stick and that you can embrace. Find something that is higher than your current mindset. If what you’re trying to affirm gets bumped out, simply go for something in between.

For example, remember that whatever you are thinking or doing, your cells listening. This is empowering because it puts you back into the driver’s seat of everything that is happening in your body and your life, and it brings you back into the truth and reality that you are not a victim of circumstance or a hostage to a diagnosis. Circumstances and perspectives can be changed, and that change starts within you!

One way to get around any negativity that may bump out the positive affirmations is to state your affirmation in the form of a question. Take three deep breaths and ask questions such as “Why do I absolutely love my life?” and then just feel what comes up as an answer or a response. The amazing fact is that your body has to answer the question, and if you start accepting the reality that your mind answers any question that is asked, you’re going to start asking very different questions.

The most powerful and advantageous time to do affirmations is when you first wake up in the morning and right before you go to bed.

When you wake up in the morning, your brain is in an altered state; it’s that beautiful time between your deep sleep and the busyness of your mind. This is the place where your brain is susceptible to receiving new kinds of information which means it’s not going to bump out these affirmations so easily.

The hour before you go to bed is the time where you are feeding your mind. While you sleep, your brain is processing everything that you’ve been thinking, and so right before you go to bed is the time to start putting in this new information.

These steps are so simple, but incredibly powerful:

Your cells are listening to every statement that you affirm about yourself, your health, your wellbeing, your life, and what’s possible.

So be sure to use this communication to your advantage!

Be well!

    • Great!! Noah is a friend of ours. One of the things that greatly empowers affirmations (and Afformations!) is using EFT to neutralize and release any limiting beliefs or countering beliefs. Please reach out if I can support you in any way with this!

  2. Hi Dr. Kim!
I love your tips! They’re so easy to integrate into my daily routine. The only thing that gets me is when you say that we may not be doing it correctly. As a recovering perfectionist I find that if I look at it as if I’m doing it in an empowering way or a disempowering way. Looking at it from how am I doing it wrong keeps me in the negative frame of mind. So when doing affirmations, for me, stating things in the affirmative, “I am” something instead of “I’m not” something is way more powerful. Two affirmations of received from my own inner wisdom that help me be more positive and empowered are “I am a fearless, inspirational Bulldog;)” and “I am a gentle loving soul”. These help me feel connected to myself and others with a lot more compassion. Thanks for keeping the light on MindBody health.

    • Great point, Michele! You’re right; you can’t do it “wrong,” just in a way that’s disempowering. After seeing someone’s response: “I do not have fibromyalgia. I am not exhausted…” I got a little passionate. Sometimes we can put so much energy into something without realizing it’s not working the way we want it to.
      Thanks for responding!!
